Dr Deirdre McCabe is a Specialist Clinical Psychologist based in Northern Ireland working within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. As an Assistant Psychologist Deirdre worked in a specialist Adult Mental Health setting that provided psychological assessment and intervention in particular to those who experienced trauma related to the political-conflict in Northern Ireland. During this time Deirdre completed a master’s in Counselling and Therapeutic Communication through Ulster University.
She completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in Queen’s University Belfast in 2015. Deirdre currently works in Clinical Health Psychology specialising in chronic pain management and psychological interventions for individuals who have required plastic surgery due to illness or traumatic incident. Prior to this she worked in an Adult Community Learning Disability Service providing psychological therapies to adults with a learning disability and their support systems. This work involved 1:1 talking therapies, systemic working, consultancy, multi-disciplinary working, capacity assessment, and psychometric testing. She is also a clinical supervisor to both psychologists and other health practitioners.
Deirdre is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK and is a chartered member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). In 2018 she was nominated for the Early Career Award by the Division of Clinical Psychology Northern Ireland for her contribution to the profession within the region. Deirdre has worked with clients with a wide range of difficulties including health anxiety, generalised anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, social anxiety, depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, trauma, stress, interpersonal difficulties, and personality disorder.
Deirdre uses a range of evidence based interventions, tailored to the individual needs of her clients. Therapeutic approaches include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Brief Psychodynamic Therapy, Systemic, Compassion Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
